The Storm
Adak, Alaska
October 1957

These four pictures were taken going into Adak, Alaska in October of 1957.  In 40-foot seas, none of us was allowed in the crow's nest and we did our watch from the bridge.  We were not allowed to submerge.

While taking the second picture, I hit my head on a 50 cal. machine gun mount and bled all over the deck.  We were wearing dry suits and I didn't know I was bleeding!  The captain told me to go below and the others followed.

The watch was done by periscope until we left the storm.
